Building a Values-Based Private Practice:
Consultation

Our values-based practice consultations are for clinicians interested in starting their own private practice, expanding their practice, or figuring out how to bring their current practice more in line with their values.

I started Brooklyn Behavioral Therapy because I wanted to build a practice that was firmly grounded in my values, felt authentic to me, AND was also financially sustainable. It was extremely difficult to find models of what I wanted to create. It was hard enough to even find resources explaining the basic logistics needed to open a private practice properly. The limited business advice I did receive felt overly cold, inauthentic, or questionably clinically sound. I decided to develop my own model for the practice I believed was possible.

In speaking to people over the years, I have realized that many, many therapists are interested in creating a practice that aligns with their value system but they don't know how to go about it. I have loved figuring out the logistics of building a more ethical business - it's something I find really energizing and am extremely passionate about. I want to share the resources and insight I've developed over the years to make it easier for others' to build their own values-based practices. My hope is that access to these resources helps further my own values-based goals of increased access to treatment and increased quality of life for clinicians.

Some issues that have been addressed in past consultations:

  • Balancing accessible care and financial stability

  • Developing a fair and standardized sliding scale to meet client need and satisfy legal concerns

  • Hiring employees; things to consider in the hiring process; figuring out a fair compensation structure

  • Creating an equitable environment for employees

  • The steps required to start a private practice in New York

  • Navigating NYS Paid Family Leave benefits

  • Tolerating the financial ebbs and flows of being in private practice
  • Feeling comfortable taking time off

  • Observing and setting limits with clients

  • Managing burnout

  • Increasing competency and confidence as a clinician

We offer both one-on-one consultation and small-group consultation formats to try to make these resources accessible to as many people as possible.

If cost is prohibitive for either format, there are scholarship spots available based on financial need. Please request a scholarship form if you need a scholarship spot.

Small Group Consultation

In our small group consultations, 4-6 clinicians meet once a month for a series of six groups. We start with an exercise to help clinicians identify their values and then translate them into the logistics of running a practice. In each session clinicians will come with questions about challenges that are coming up for them. Consultation is intended to provide insight and resources on how to navigate these challenges as well as build up clinicians' ability to trust their own instincts.

Fee: $600 ($100/meeting for 6 meetings)

Individual Consultation

My goal in individual consultation is ultimately to help you figure out what you want your practice to look like, provide resources to support you in that, and help you learn to access your own wise mind as challenges come up.

Fee: $275/60 minute consultation session
